Margaret Scott was born on 5 Jul 1844 in the Madison Parish of Louisiana, likely on the Scotland Plantation operated by her father Robert Moore Scott and his brother Thomas B. Scott (98, 422). Little is known about Margaret Scott’s mother, Gincy Ann (Phillips) Scott (269). At the birth of their daughter Margaret, Robert M. Scott was 35 years old and Gincy Ann Scott was 33.

The 14 Aug 1850 federal census of Madison Parish, Louisiana enumerates the household of Robert M. Scott, age 42 years and born in Mississippi (417). Also living in the household were Gincy A. Scott, 37 years old and born in Tennessee; Robert T. Scott, age 15; Agnes E. Scott, age 12; Margaret Scott, age 6; Julia Scott, age 4; and William Scott, age 2 years. All children were born in Louisiana.

On 19 Aug 1860, the federal census of Madison Parish, Louisiana enumerated the Robert M. Scott household as Robert M. Scott, 50 years old and born in Mississippi; G. A. Scott, 49 years old and born in Tennessee; R. T. Scott, age 22; Margaret Scott, age 15; Julia Scott, age 14; William Scott, age 11; Florence Scott, age 9; and Claiborne Scott, age 4 years  (418). All children of Robert and Gincy Scott were born in Louisiana.

On 21 Jun 1867, Margaret Scott and Thomas Warren Briscoe, Sr. married in Madison Parish, Louisiana (937). Margaret Scott was 22 years old and Thomas Briscoe was age 35 years. Born on 16 Feb 1832 in Claiborne County, Mississippi, Thomas Warren Briscoe was a son of Thomas Briscoe and Ann (Warren) Briscoe. Thomas Briscoe was married previously to Elizabeth Moore Humphreys who died on 25 Feb 1864. A daughter, Florence Claiborne Briscoe, was born to Thomas and Margaret Briscoe in Madison Parish, Louisiana on 24 Jul 1868 (490).

The 1870 federal census of Madison Parish, Louisiana enumerates the household of T. Warren Briscoe and his wife Margaret S. (Scott) Briscoe (419). T. Warren Briscoe was 39 years of age, born in Mississippi, and working as a farmer. Margaret S. Briscoe was age 36 years and born in Louisiana. Two children were living in the household: Warren Briscoe, age 8; and Flora Briscoe, age 2 years. Both children were born in Louisiana. T. Warren Briscoe and his wife held real estate valued at $12,000 and a personal estate valued at $4,000.

On 2 Sep 1870, a second daughter, Elizabeth Moore Briscoe, was born to Thomas and Margaret Briscoe (938).

On 30 Nov 1871, Thomas Warren Briscoe, Sr. died in Madison Parish Louisiana. At his death, Thomas Briscoe was 39 years old. Margaret (Scott) Briscoe was 27. On 1 Sep 1875, Margaret (Scott) Briscoe and James Armstrong Stone married at Monroe in Madison Parish, Louisiana (310). James A. Stone was a son of William Patrick Stone and his wife Amanda Susan (Ragan) Stone.

The 1880 federal census of Madison Parish, Louisiana enumerates the household of James A. Stone, age 34 years and born in Louisiana with Margaret Stone, age 31; W. R. Stone, age 4; J. S. Stone, age 2; and A. W. Stone, a: 4 months. All members of the household were born in Louisiana (420). The census recorded James A. Stone as a country merchant. His father was born in Tennessee and his mother in Mississippi.

The 1900 federal census enumerates the Margaret Stone household at Iowa Park in Wichita County, Texas (444). Margaret (Scott) Stone was 55 years old and born in Jul 1844. Living with her were her son William R. Stone, 23 years old and born in Oct 1876 in Louisiana and her daughter Kate Stone, age 18 and born in Jan 1882 in Louisiana. The census recorded Margaret Stone as a widow and mother of six children, five of whom were living.

On 2 Jan 1902, Margaret Stone, citing a long illness, wrote advance directives to her children regarding the distribution of her property at her death (415).

On 3 Jan 1903, William Ragan Stone II paid real estate tax on behalf of his mother Margaret Stone. Tax was for Iowa Park lots 4, 5, and 6 in Block 37.

On 12 May 1903, Margaret Stone wrote to her daughter Florence (Briscoe) Waddill from Iowa Park in Wichita County, Texas (745). In her letter, Margaret Stone relates that her husband, James Armstrong Stone intended to return to Iowa Park from Louisiana on 5 Jun 1903.

James Stone was in Louisiana before 29 Nov 1905 when he died at Tallulah in Madison Parish, Louisiana of yellow fever.

Margaret (Scott) Briscoe Stone died at 11:00 pm, 12 Feb 1911 in Iowa Park, Texas (422, 472). A prayer service was held at the home of Frank L. Emanuel and Kate S. Emanuel, a daughter of Margaret Stone. Rev. E. L. Lowrance, 1st Presbyterian Church assisted by Rev. R. R. Hamlin, 1st Christian Church of Wichita Falls conducted the funeral service held in Wichita Falls, Texas. The Rebekahs of Iowa Park Lodge conducted a graveside ceremony.

Margaret (Scott) Briscoe Stone is buried in Highland Cemetery at Iowa Park in Wichita County, Texas (422). Her grave is located in Plot 68069—RW—01.

Notes and Comments

Warren Briscoe, eight years old and living in the Thomas and Margaret Briscoe household at the 1870 census was likely Thomas Warren Briscoe, Jr., born 31 Oct 1861 to Thomas Briscoe Sr. and his first wife, Elizabeth Moore (Humphreys) Briscoe (419). Elizabeth Moore Briscoe died on 25 Feb 1864.

The 1880 federal census of Madison Parish either did not record a birth place for the mother or father of Margaret  (Scott) Stone or the information is not legible on the available image.

The 1900 federal census of Wichita County, Texas recorded Margaret Stone as a widow. Her husband James Armstrong Stone; who was living at Tallulah in Madison Parish, Louisiana; did not die until 29 Nov 1905.

Margaret Scott was Episcopalian by faith.
