William Patterson, Jr. was born on 3 May 1762 in Northampton County, North Carolina (964, Page 224). He was a son of William Patterson, Sr. and his wife Keziah (Reams) Patterson. The Patterson’s were members of the Religious Society of Friends, the Quakers.

On 22 Aug 1781, William Patterson, Jr. and Elizabeth Ladd married at the Jack Swamp Meeting House in Northampton County, North Carolina (964 Page 252, 1045).  Eight children were born to William and Elizabeth Patterson before 1790 (1007, 964, Page 224):

Phereby, the first-born son to William and Elizabeth Patterson, died on 24 Sep 1784, at less than one year of age (964, Page 224).

The 2 Aug 1790 federal census of Northampton County, North Carolina enumerates the William Patterson, Jr. household including a male more than 15 years old who was presumably William Patterson, Jr. (963). Three of the four males less than 16 years old were likely: Garrad, Silas, and Silas Patterson. Five females were living in the household: in addition to William’s wife, Elizabeth (Ladd) Patterson; were his daughters: Sylvia Patterson, Sarah, Mary, and Tabitha Patterson.

The 4 Aug 1800 federal census of Halifax in Northampton County, North Carolina enumerates the William Patterson, Jr. household (1003). William Patterson, Jr. was 26–44 years old, and a 26–44 year-old female was likely his wife Elizabeth (Ladd) Patterson. The census of other household members is reasonably consistent with the known children of William and Elizabeth Patterson:

Between 7 Feb 1807 and 16 May 1807, the William Patterson, Jr. family emigrated from Northampton County, North Carolina to Jefferson County, Ohio (216, Page 261). The Patterson family probably traveled by wagon with a group of Quaker families from Northampton County, including other other Patterson families. On 16 May 1807, the Short Creek Monthly Meeting of Friends received William Patterson and his wife Elizabeth with children: Tabitha, Silas, Jeremiah, Exum, and Rachel on a certificate from the Jack Swamp Monthly Meeting of North Carolina dated 7 Feb 1807 (216, Page 261). William Patterson appears on the 1807 tax list for the Smithfield Township of Jefferson County, Ohio (1008).

On 31 May 1808, The Stillwater Monthly Meeting in Belmont County, Ohio received William Patterson and his wife Elizabeth with children: Silas, Tabitha, Jeremiah, Exum, and Rachel on a certificate issued by the Short Creek Monthly Meeting dated 22 Mar 1808 (216, Page 427).

William Patterson appears on a 1810 tax list for the Warren Township of Belmont County, Ohio (1004).

The 1820 federal census of the Warren Township of Belmont County, Ohio enumerates the household of William Patterson, more than 45 years old, and a female more than 45 years old, presumably Elizabeth (Ladd) Patterson (1005). Similarly, the 1830 federal census of the Warren Township of Belmont County enumerates the William Patterson household (1006). William Patterson was 60–69 years old, and a female, likely Elizabeth Patterson, was also 60–69 years old.

William Patterson, Jr. made a will in Belmont County, Ohio on 19 Sep 1833 (961). He died in Belmont County before 27 Mar 1834 when a bond was posted and letters of administration were issued in the settlement of his estate (962).

Notes and Comments

The 1790 federal census of Northampton County, North Carolina enumerates nine Patterson households on adjacent lines of the same page (963). Apparently, a number of Patterson families lived in close proximity in Northampton County.

The 1800 census of the William Patterson, Jr. household includes a female, 16–25 years old and a female, less than 10 years old, who are not accounted for by the known children of William and Elizabeth Patterson.

With the exception of Washington County, all 1810 federal census records for Ohio are lost.

The Rich Square Monthly Meeting of Friends in Northampton County, North Carolina was established on 31 May 1760 (971).

The Short Creek Monthly Meeting was established by the Redstone Quarterly Meeting on 5 Mar 1804.

The Stillwater Monthly Meeting of Friends in Belmont County, Ohio was established by the Short Creek Quarterly Meeting on 29 Mar 1808 (216, Page 361)

Jefferson County, Ohio was created on 29 Jul 1797in the Northwest Territory from Washington County and part of the Western Reserve. On 7 Sep 1801, Belmont County was created from parts of Jefferson County.
