William L. Patterson was born on 20 Nov 1819, very likely in Belmont County, Ohio (216, Page 426; 969). He was a son Jeremiah Patterson and his wife Elizabeth (Plummer) Patterson. At William’s birth, Jeremiah Patterson was 29 years old, and Elizabeth was 24 years old. The Patterson’s were members of the Religious Society of Friends, the Quakers.

The 7 Aug 1820 federal census of the Warren Township of Belmont County, Ohio enumerates the Jeremiah Patterson household, including a male, less than 10 years old, who was very likely William L. Patterson (982). Similarly, William L. Patterson was very likely the 10–14 year-old male living in the Jeremiah Patterson household at the 1830 federeal census of Belmont County (983), as well as the 20–29 year-old male recorded as living in the Jeremiah Patterson household at the 1840 federal census of Athens County, Ohio (984).

William L. Patterson and Sarah Ann Cadwalader married on 11 Oct 1841 in Morgan County, Ohio (1315). At their marriage, William L. Patterson was 21 years old and Sarah Ann Cadwalader was 20 years old. Sarah was a daughter of David Cadwalader and Sarah (Lipsey) Cadwalader.

Apparently, the marriage was not strictly in accord with the conservative practices of the Chesterfield Monthly Meeting of Friends. On 20 Jan 1842, the Chesterfield Monthly Meeting disowned William L. Patterson for disunity, and on 15 Mar 1842, the meeting condemned Sarah Ann Patterson, formerly Cadwalader, for marriage contrary to discipline (216, Page 1109). William Patterson was similarly condemned for marriage contrary to discipline on 16 Sep 1842.  On 17 Nov 1842, Jeremiah Patterson, William’s father, was also disowned by the Chesterfield Monthly Meeting for disunity. Regardless of these concerns, the Chesterfield Monthly Meeting continued to record the births of children of William L. and Sarah Ann Patterson (216, Page 1109).

A first child, a son Josiah B. Patterson, was born to William and Sarah Patterson in Morgan County, Ohio on 28 Oct 1842 (216, Page 1109; 1084). A daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Patterson, was born in Morgan County on 19 Apr 1845 (216, Page 1109; 1110), and a daughter, Rachel B. Patterson, was born in Morgan County on 18 May 1848 (216, Page 1109; 1311).

The 15 Aug 1850 federal census of Marion Township in Morgan County, Iowa enumerates the household of William Patterson, age 31 years and born in Ohio (965). William was working as a farmer. Also living in the household were William’s wife, Sarah (Cadwalader) Patterson, 28 years old and born in Ohio, along with three children: Josiah, 9 years old; Sarah, 7 years old; and Rachel, 2 years old. In addition to the three children of William and Sarah Patterson, was one-year old Margaret Cadwalader. All children were born in Ohio. The Patterson family held $500 in real estate.

Between 14 Jul 1853 and 12 Jul 1854, a daughter Edith was born to William and Sarah Ann Patterson (966).

In 1854, William L. Patterson acquired land in Boone County, Iowa, and the Patterson family migrated to Boone County in 1856 (217, Page 45).

The 13 Jul 1860 federal census enumerates the William Patterson household of the Worth Township of Boone County, Iowa (966). William Patterson was 40 years old, born in Ohio, and working as a farmer. His wife Sarah A. Patterson was 38 years old and born in Ohio. Six children were living in the household: Josiah Patterson, 17 years old; Sarah E. Patterson, 15 years old; Rachell Patterson, 12 years old; Edith Patterson, 6 years old; Charles Cadwalader, 15 years old and working as a farmer; and Margaret Cadwalader, 10 years old. All children were born in Ohio. William Patterson held $1,800 in real estate and a personal estate of $750.

During the period 1863–1866, William L. Patterson served as County Supervisor for Boone County, Iowa (221, Page 231).

At the 21 Jun 1870 federal census, the William L. Patterson family resided in the Worth Township of Boone County, Iowa (967). William Patterson was 51 years old, born in Ohio, and working as a farmer. Sarah (Cadwalader) Patterson was 48 years old and born in Ohio. Eda Patterson was 15 years old. Elizabeth Patterson, 75 years old and born in Maryland, and Elinora Helin, 13 years old and born in Illinois were also living in the William Patterson household. Addison Lewis, a 37 year old farm laborer, born in Pennsylvania was enumerated with the Patterson household. William Patterson held real estate valued at $2,500 and a personal estate of $670.

William L. Patterson made a will in Boone County, Iowa on 21 Nov 1877 (970). He bequeathed all property real, personal, or mixed to his wife Sarah A. Patterson and named her as sole executor of his estate. George W. Crouks and M. K. Ramsy witnessed the will.

The 1880 federal census of the Douglas Township of Boone County, Iowa recorded the household of Willam Patterson, 60 years old and born in Ohio. William was working as a farmer. His father was born in Maryland, and his mother was born in Maryland. Sarah Patterson was 58 years old, born in Ohio, and keeping house. Her father was born in Pennsylvania and her mother was born in North Carolina. The census enumerates Ada Cadwallader, 17 years old and born in Iowa as a servant. Her father was born in Ohio and her mother was born in Ireland. John Johnson, 27 years old and born in Sweden was working as a farmer. His parents were born in Sweden.

William L. Patterson died on 26 May 1884 at Colfax in Boone County, Iowa of Bright’s disease (969). He is buried in the Clark Cemetery at Luther in Boone County, Iowa (1310).
