John G Anderson

John G. Anderson was born in Sweden, likely at Urshult, on 5 Mar 1859 (628). According to the 1925 Iowa state census and obituaries at his death, John G. Anderson was a son of Andrew Anderson and his wife Bridget (Ericson) Anderson (708, 709).

John Anderson immigrated to the United States of America in 1879 at age 20 years, and by 12 Jun 1880 he was living in Dix Township of Ford County, Illinois where the 1880 federal census enumerates him as 21 years old and working as a farm laborer while living in the Robert Wilson household (702). According to the 1880 census, both parents of John G. Anderson were born in Sweden. In 1884 at age 24 years, John Guslov Anderson was naturalized as a U.S. citizen.

John G. Anderson and Louise Johnson married in Ford County, Illinois on 6 Oct 1884 (706). Louise Sophia Johnson was a daughter of August Johnson and his wife Christene (Anderson) Johnson. At the time of their marriage, John Anderson was 25 years old and Louisa Johnson was age 19 years. Louisa Johnson was previously married to Swan A. Johnson; however, her maiden name was also Johnson. At the 1880 federal census, the Swan A. and Louisa Johnson family lived in Iroquois County, Illinois.

John G. Anderson appears on an 1890 tax list for Pigeon Grove Township in Iroquois County, Illinois (705).

While living in Illinois, four children were born to Louise and John Anderson (1020): Frank Walfrid Anderson on 29 Mar 1886; Jennie M. Anderson in about 1888; Claude Alvin Anderson on 23 Sep 1891 at Rankin in Vermilion County, Illinois; and Alice Mabel Anderson on 27 Jun 1893. Jennie Anderson died soon after birth.

The 19 Jun 1900 federal census of Iroquois County, Illinois enumerates the John G. Anderson household in Pigeon Grove Township (704). John Anderson was 41 years old, and the census recorded his immigration to the USA in 1879 at age 21. Both parents were born in Sweden. His wife Louisa (Johnson) Anderson was born in Sweden in Feb 1855. Both of her parents were also born in Sweden. At the 1900 census, the couple had been married 15 years. All three children were born in Illinois.

Also living in the John Anderson household at the 1900 federal census were three children of Louisa Johnson by her first marriage to Swan A. Johnson: Albert Johnson, born in Mar 1877; Ustus Johnson, born Feb 1879; and Amanda Johnson, born in Apr of 1882. All three Johnson children were born in Illinois.

Before 8 Feb 1902, the John G. Anderson family migrated from Iroquois County, Illinois to Calhoun County, Iowa. On 1 Mar 1902, John G. Anderson purchased 280 acres of land in Calhoun County, Iowa from Sherrhod B. Adams for $16,600 (585). The deed by Sherrhod Adams describes the property as the southwest 1/4, the south 1/2 of the northwest 1/4, and the northeast 1/4 of the northwest 1/4 of Section 32 in Township 86 North of Range 31 West of the 5th Prime Meridian. The deed was filed on 3 Mar 1902.

The 1910 federal census of the Cedar Township of Calhoun County, Iowa enumerates the household of John G. Anderson and his wife Louisa (Johnson) Anderson (1018), 54 years old and born in Sweden. Also living in the John Anderson household were children: Frank Anderson, age 23; Claude Anderson, age 19; and Alice Anderson, age 16 years. All children were born in Illinois.

The 16 Jan 1920 Federal Census of the Cedar Township of Calhoun County, Iowa enumerates the household of John G. The Illinois Statewide Marriage Index records the marriage of John G. Anderson and Louise Johnson in Ford County, Illinois on 6 Oct 1884 (706). Louise Johnson is listed as “Mrs. Louise Johnson (Johnson),” implying that she married previously, but that her maiden name was also Johnson. The Illinois marriage index also records the marriage of Louisa Sophia Johnson to S. A. Johnson in Ford County, Illinois on 2 May 1874 (1027). Presumably, this was the first marriage of Louise Johnson.

Louisa Sophia Johnson married John G. Anderson after the death of her first husband, Swan A. Johnson. Based on the 1990 Federal Census, it appears that John G. Anderson and Louisa Sophia  (Johnson) Anderson may have lived in Iroquois County, Illinois home owned by Swan A. Johnson prior to his death. Presumably, Sophia Anderson inherited the property and proceeds from its sale may have provided the $16,600 used to purchase land in Calhoun County, Iowa in 1902.

The certificate of the death of John G. Anderson states that he was born in “Oshultel, Sweeden” (1017).  Sweden is misspelled throughout the death certificate, and Oshultel may refer to Urshult, a community in the Tingsryd Municipality of Kronberg County, Sweden. John Anderson’s son Claude A. Anderson was the informant for the death certificate.

Piper Cemetery is located in the Logan Township of Calhoun County, Iowa at: 42.36944° north latitude, -94.54167° west longitude. The certificate of the death of John G. Anderson states that he was buried in the Skaraborg Cemetery in Logan Township of Calhoun County, Iowa on 27 Nov 1938 (1017).
