Biography notes for Mary Bell
Mary, Wife of John Morton ca. (1767 – 1830)

Mary, the wife of John Morton was likely born before Jul 1767. Her birthplace is unknown. Mary and John Morton likely married in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania before 30 Sep 1782. A daughter, Nancy Bell Morton, was born to Mary and John Morton in Jun 1783.

By 1790, John and Mary Morton and their family were living at North Huntington in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. The 1790 federal census of Westmoreland County enumerates the household of John Morton who was more than 15 years old (664). Also living in the household were a male less than 16 years old and two females, presumably Mary Morton and Nancy Bell Morton. The 1800 Pennsylvania Septennial Census lists John Morton as residing in Derry Township of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania (665).

In 1806, John Morton’s daughter, Nancy Bell Morton, married Henry Livingston in Indiana County, Pennsylvania (369).

The 1810 federal census of Black Lick Township in Indiana County, Pennsylvania enumerates the household of Jno Morton (666). Jno Morton was more than 44 years old, and a female household member, presumably Mary Morton, was 26–44 years old. Also living in the household were two 16–25 year old males, a 10–15 year old male, two 10–15 year old females, three males less than 10 years old, and a female less than 10 years old. The 1810 census enumerates the household Henry Livingston at the dwelling adjacent to that occupied by the Jno Morton household. This Livingston household was very likely that of Henry Livingston and his wife Nancy Bell (Morton) Livingston.

John Morton has not been identified within Indiana County, Pennsylvania records after the 1810 federal census. But the 1820 federal census of the Blacklick Township of Indiana County, Pennsylvania enumerates the household of Mary Morton, more than 44 years old and likely the widow of John Morton, more than 44 years old (668). Also living in the household were a female, more than 44 years old, a male 20–15 years old, a 10–15 year old female, a male, 16–25 years old, a male less than 10 years old, and a female less than 10 years old. The Mary Morton household resided in a dwelling adjacent to the David Morton household. The 1820 federal census enumerates the Henry Livingston household on the same page.

Presumably, John Morton died before the 1820 federal census, and is buried in Indiana County.

The 1830 federal census of the Black Lick Township of Indiana County, Pennsylvania enumerates the household of Mary Morton, 60–69 years old (667). Also living in the household were a 80–89 year-old female, a 20–29 year-old male, and a 15–19 year-old female.

Notes and Comments

A daughter, Nancy Bell Morton was born to John Morton and his wife Mary in Jun 1783. Assuming that Mary was at least 16 years old at Nancy’s birth, then Mary was born before Jul 1767.

Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania was created on 26 Feb 1773 from parts of Bedford County.

Indiana County, Pennsylvania was created on 30 Mar 1803 from parts of Lycoming County and Westmoreland County. The boundaries of Indiana County remained unchanged until 29 Apr 1855.
