Biography notes for John Morton
John Morton ca. (1755 – 1820)

John Morton was likely born before Jul 1755. His birthplace and actual date of birth have not been identified. Presumably, John Morton was in Westmorland County, Pennsylvania by Jul 1773.

On 23 Jul 1773, Richard Penn issued a warrant to John Morton to survey 300 acres of land in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania on a run empty way into the North Branch of Black Lick Creek including a shall improvement (674). John Morton returned the survey on 9 Jun 1774. On 1 Jul 1776, John Penn issued a second warrant to John Morton to survey an additional 300 acres adjoining land held by Thomas Afflick to include part of the lowest hills in Hempfield Township of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania (675). John Morton returned the survey on 3 Jun 1787.

John Morton likely married in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania before Oct 1782, and a child, Nancy Bell Morton, was born to John and his wife Mary in Westmoreland County in Jun 1783.

John Morton appeared on Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania tax lists for 1783, 1786, and 1787 (670, 671, 673). Tax lists for 1786 and 1787 assign John Morton to North Huntingdon Township of Westmoreland County.

The 1790 federal census of Westmoreland County enumerates the household of John Morton, more than 15 years old (664). Also living in the household were a male less than 16 years old and two females, presumably John’s wife Mary and their daughter Nancy Bell Morton. John Morton appears on the 1798 U.S. Direct Tax List for Washington Township of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania (672).

The 1800 Pennsylvania Septennial Census lists John Morton as residing in Derry Township of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania (665). On 6 Feb 1800, John Morton witnessed the Will of John Wilkens in the Derry Township of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania (669).

In 1806, John Morton’s daughter, Nancy Bell Morton, married Henry Livingston in Indiana County, Pennsylvania (369).

The 1810 federal census of Blacklick Township in Indiana County, Pennsylvania enumerates the household of Jno Morton as older than 44 years, and a female household member, presumably Jno’s wife, was 26–44 years old (666). Also living in the Jno Morton household were two 16–25 year old males, a 10–15 year old male, two 10–15 year old females, three males less than 10 years old, and a female less than 10 years old. The 1810 census enumerates a Henry Livingston household at the dwelling adjacent to that occupied by the Jno Morton household (543). Henry Livingston was likely the husband of John Morton’s daughter Nancy Bell Morton.

John Morton has not been identified in Indiana County, Pennsylvania records after the 1810 federal census. The 1820 federal census of Blacklick Township of Indiana County, Pennsylvania enumerates the household of Mary Morton, more than 44 years old and likely the widow of John Morton (668).

Presumably, John Morton died before the 1820 federal census, and is buried in Indiana County, Pennsylvania.

Notes and Comments

John Morton of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania and his wife had a daughter Nancy Bell Morton, born in Jun 1783. Presumably John Morton and his wife married in Westmorland County, Pennsylvania before Oct 1782. Assuming that John Morton was at least 18 years old when he married, then he was born before Oct 1764.

Additionally, John Penn issued a warrant to John Morton to survey land on 1 Jul 1776, and if John was at least 21 years old at the time, then he was born before 2 Jul 1755.

The 1810 federal census enumerates Henry Leviston as the head of a household residing at the dwelling adjacent to that of the Jno Morton household (543). Henry Leviston was likely Henry Livingston, the husband of John Morton’s daughter, Nancy Bell (Morton) Livingston.

Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania was created on 26 Feb 1773 from parts of Bedford County.

Indiana County, Pennsylvania was created on 30 Mar 1803 from parts of Lycoming County and Westmoreland County. The boundaries of Indiana County remained unchanged until 29 Apr 1855.
