Recollections of Kate Stone Emanuel (Kate Holmes Stone)

My fathers side:

Patrick Armstrong Stone
Amanda Rebecca Ragan
Married in Mississippi and with their family
William Ragan Stone
Coleman Stone
Kate Stone
John B. Stone
James Armstrong Stone
Amanda Rebecca Stone
and an infant whose name I never knew.

Now as to the history part which was handed down to me through the years by Papa, Mama and other members of the family. The family with Mrs. Stone’s brother Wiley Bohanon Ragan, his stock and slaves, as well as my grand parents stock and slaves, crossed the Mississippi River at Vicksburg by ferry and settled at Delta, Louisiana, which was at that time the Parish Seat. While living there Grandfather and the infant died of cholera, which was an epidemic at that time. Grandmother moved onto the land which they had purchased and named Brokenburn.

The name of plantation originally was used as each reprt the Stones named bring luck about the progress they were making on the land was that each day they broke and burned, meaning as they cut trees and brush that they plowed and burned more land.

My grandmother passed away when I was 12 years old in the same house, not the same house where Amy still lives.

William Ragan Stone was injured early in the Civil War and returned to help at home. He married and had one son, Barnett Stone.

Uncle Colman was killed at Clinton, Mississippi during the war. Kate Stone married Captain Henry Bry Holmes soon after the war and two children grew to a good old age. Amy now living and William who died several years ago, no heirs.

John B. Stone married Virginia Robb of Mississippi and left two heirs John Jr. and Virginia. I do not know if either are living as they moved to California after Uncle John’s death and never kept in touch with the family.

Amanda Stone never married and died in 89 years at the home place.

James Stone (my father) married Margaret Scott Briscoe, a widow with a step son Warren Briscoe, Jr. and two daughters Florence and Elizabeth, then they had four children
