Biography notes for Frances Lewis Emanuel
Francis Lewis Emanuel (6 Sep 1874 – 24 May 1942)

Frances Lewis “Frank” Emanuel was born on 6 Sep 1874 at Talbotton in Talbot County, Georgia. His parents were William David Emanuel and his third wife, Martha Susan Emanuel (George). At the birth of their son Frank, William Emanuel was 43 years of age, and Martha was age 32. Frank Emanuel was their second child. Their first child, Sarah Jane Emanuel, born on 10 Mar 1873, died soon after birth.

As an infant, Frank Emanuel very likely lived on the Emanuel plantation in Talbot County. During reconstruction following the American Civil War, southern planters were challenged to succeed in a new economy and labor market. In about 1877, when Frank Emanuel was about 3 years of age, the William David Emanuel family migrated from Talbot County, Georgia to Clay County, Texas.

The 23 Jun 1880 federal census of Clay County, Texas enumerates the household of W. D. Emanuel, age 48 years and born in Georgia, including his wife M. S. Emanuel, age 39 and born in Georgia; I. C. Emanuel, age 16; Lilly Emanuel, age 14; Frank Emanuel, age 6; Mark Emanuel, age 3; and B. Emanuel, age 3 months. Mark Emanuel and the infant, B. Emanuel, were both born in Texas; all other children were born in Georgia. W. D. Emanuel’s step-daughter Gordy C. Emanuel, age 18 and born in Georgia, was also living in the household. Gordy Emanuel was a daughter of Martha Susan George and her first husband Gilbert P. Gordey.

Frank Emanuel’s mother, Martha Susan George, died on 17 Nov 1890 at Henrietta in Clay County, Texas. She was 48 years of age. At the time of her death, Frank Emanuel was age 16 years.

After the death of his mother, Martha Susan Emanuel (George), Frank Emanuel lived with the Ikard family at Henrietta in Clay County, Texas and worked as a “coal boy” in Mr. Ikard’s lumber yard, delivering to local residents.

On 29 Dec 1901, Francis Lewis Emanuel married Kate Holmes Stone at Wichita Falls in Wichita County, Texas. Although Kate Stone’s mother did not approved of the marriage, the couple eloped to Wichita Falls.

Before 5 Jun 1907, Frank Emanuel was working as manager of a Mayfield Lumber yard at Iowa Park in Wichita County, Texas. On 30 Jan 1909, Frank L. Emanuel acquired land at Iowa Park in Wichita County, Texas from C. Birk and wife Lucy Birk for $600 (280). The land was within Lot 4 in Block D of the town of Iowa Park and described as beginning at the southeast corner of said lot; thence west 7 feed; thence north 8 feet; thence east 7 feet; thence south 7 feet to the place of beginning used for alleyway purposes.

On 23 Apr 1910, the Frank Emanuel family resided at Wichita Falls in Wichita County, Texas where the 1910 federal census enumerates the household including Frank L. Emanuel, age 30 years and born in Georgia; Kate Emanuel, age 28 and born in Louisiana; Lewis Emanuel, age 5; Claibe Emanuel, age 3 years; and Katie Emanuel, age 6 months. All three children were born in Texas. Frank Emanuel was working as an auditor with a lumber company.

Before 1912, Frank and Kate Emanuel migrated to Oklahoma City in Oklahoma County, Oklahoma.

By 1913, Frank Lewis Emanuel was working at Dallas in Dallas County, Texas as the local yard manager for the J. S. Mayfield Lumber Company (286). He resided on Elm Street at the southeast corner of the T & P Railway.

On 12 Sep 1818, Francis Lewis Emanuel registered for the World War I draft at Wichita Falls in Wichita County, Texas. He stated that he was self employed in the oil business.

On 8 Aug 1919, Frank Emanuel acquired part interest in an oil and gas lease in Wichita County, Texas within Block 74 of the Red River Valley Lands. O. W. Cox deeded the oil and gas rights to Frank Emanuel for $1.00 in hand and other valuable considerations (285).
