Stephen Petrus Voorhees (21 Jan 1738 – 12 Jun 1815)

Stephen Petrus Voorhees was born on 21 Jan 1738 in Somerset County, New Jersey (137, Page 340; 1319). He was a son of Petrus Voorhees and his wife Mary. At Stephen’s birth, his father Petrus was 26 years old. Little is know about Stephen’s mother, Mary. On 25 Mar 1762, Stephen Petrus Voorhees and Margareta Van Dyke married, presumably in Somerset County, New Jersey (137, Page 340).

Eight children were born to Stephen Petrus Voorhees and his wife Margareta (Van Dyke) Voorhees in Somerset County, New Jersey (137, Pages 340–351):

At the birth of his first child, Margareta Voorhees, Stephen Petrus Voorhees was 25 years old.

From Jan 1779 through Aug 1795, Stephen Voorhees appeared regularly on tax lists for the Hillsborough Township of Somerset County, New Jersey (223). On 10 Jan 1804, Stephen signed a petition to compensate land owners in Somerset County, New Jersey (201).

In about 1800, two sons of Stephen and Margareta Voorhees, Henry Voorhees and John Voorhees, migrated from Somerset County, New Jersey to the Ovid Township of Cayuga County, New York (300, Page 143; 513).

The wife of Stephen Petrus Voorhees, Margareta (Van Dyke) Voorhees died on 27 Aug 1800 in Somerset County, New Jersey (137, Page 340).

In about 1810, Stephen Petrus Voorhees joined his sons in Seneca County, New York (137, Page 340). Stephen’s daughter, Lettice (Voorhees) Minor and her husband William Minor were living in the Lodi Township of Seneca County, New York by the 10 Aug 1850 U.S. Federal Census (358).

Stephen’s daughter, Catherine Voorhees, died on 27 Sep 1802 at age 28 years (137, Page 349).

On 12 Jun 1815, Stephen died in Seneca County, New York (1319; 137, Page 340). He is buried in the McNeal Cemetery in the Lodi Township of Seneca County, New York (1319).
