Book, Kinfolks of Edgecombe Co., North Carolina by Joseph W Watson, p 110 (DB 0, p 269)
1 Jan 1817. Cullen Battle was listed as husband of Betsy Battle the dau of Jacob Battle

Book, Americans of Gentle Birth by Pittman, Vol II, p 298. Cullen Battle, MD son of Dempsey, was born in Edgecombe Co., North Carolina, 11 Mar 1785, and was educated at the State University. He was one of the most remarkable men of his day. He removed to Alabama in early manhood, after having married Mis Jane Lamon, of the old North State, and became eminently successful in hi sprofession and in his large farming operations.
By his high moral qualities and his splendid business benius he succeeded in accumulating a very large estate. He was in theory an ardent Unionist, and did not hesitate to defend his convictions, by so soon as the die was cast, like, Lee, Jackson, and other leaders in the great conflict, he threw all his influence in favor of his State, which, right or wrong, he determined to support and defend to the end. The bulk of his magnificent estate was consecrated to this object. He was also widely benevolent, and gave amny thousands of dollars to educational and religious interests. The "History of Georgia Baptists", says of him: "Whether we consider him a citizen or a Christian; whether as a masterm a husband, or a fatherl whether as possessing those stern qualities which constitute the styla of man which never compromises a principle to policy, or those amiable virtues that attract and charm by their loveliness, Dr Battle possessed that clear-cut, round and finished character on which one loves to dwell."
Descended from a long line of worthy ancestors, he seemed to combine their most excellent qualities - like the dream of the Grecian artist - in one perfect whole. Of the children born to him, four reached maturity.
