Biography notes for Elias Edmonds

Elias Edmonds ca (1615 - 1654)

Elias Edmonds was born in England in about 1615 and was likely the immigrant ancestor of the Edmonds family who resided in Lancaster County, Virginia. According to a note in The Abridged Compendium of American Genealogy, First Families of America, “Elias Edmonds, was knighted in England before he came to Virginia and settled on the Corrotoman River in about 1632.”

Elias Edmonds and Frances Heard married in Lancaster County, Virginia before 1646. Frances Heard’’s marriage to Elias Edmonds was probably her second marriage, and she was likely a widow when she married Elias Edmonds. Both Elias and Frances Edmonds died within weeks of each other in about Mar 1654. They had three children: William Edmonds, born 1646; Emma Edmonds, born about 1648; and Anne Edmonds, born about 1650.

On 6 Apr 1653, Edmonds had William Thatcher arrested, although Thatcher did not appear at Court. The judgment was against William Clapham, Jr., who was Thatcher's security. At the August Court session, Thatcher was ordered to pay 1,000 lb tobo (tobacco) for killing the hogs of Elias Edmonds (Page 63).

On 27 Mar 1654, Elias Edmonds made a Will in Lancaster County, Virginia.

Elias Edmonds does not appear on the 1654 list of tithables in Lancaster County, Virginia. Presumably, he died before the poll. Apparently, Elias Edmonds did not suffer a long illness since he was involved in business before the Lancaster County, Virginia Court shortly before his death.

On 26 Jun 1654, Edwin Connaway, William Clapham, Sr., and John Edwards submitted an appraisal of the estate of Elias Edmonds, late of Corotoman River in the County of Lancaster, deceased. The total value of the estate was 9,211 pounds of tobacco.

John Meredith and Walter Herd, administrators, submitted “A just and true account of Elias Edmonds crop made in the year of our Lord God 1653 how it is disposed of by the administrator of said Edmonds Estate,

The costs and total are expressed in pounds of tobacco.

Walter Heard was a son, by an earier marriage, of Francis Edmonds (Heard), the wife of Elias Edmonds.

John Meredith was granted use of the cattle of Elias Edmonds in return for bringing up his children.
