Robert J. Emanuel (1833 - 28 Feb 1864)

Robert J. Emanuel was born in 1833 in Talbot County, Georgia, USA. He was a son of Benjamin Thomas Emanuel and Amazon Jane Emanuel (Johnson) and their second child.

During the American Civil War, Robert J. Emanuel served with with the rank of Private in Company A, Georgia 4th Infantry Regiment, Confederate States of America. He enlisted on 26 Apr 1861. On 18 May 1862, he was admitted into the Regimental Hospital of the 4th Infantry Regiment with intermittent fever. He returned to duty on 24 May 1862.

Robert J. Emanuel died of Smallpox on 28 Feb 1864 at Guinea in Caroline County, Virginia. He is buried in the Confederate Cemetery at Fredericksburg, Virginia. Plot: Section 11, Row 4, Grave 27. (Source: Find A Grave Memorial #10910724)

Company A, 4th Georgia Infantry

Company A, 4th Georgia Infantry, Doles' Brigade, Rodes' Division, 2nd Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, C.S.A.

The 4th Infantry Regiment, organized in April, 1861, at Augusta, Georgia, recruited its companies in the counties of Talbot, Troup, Macon, Gordon, Twiggs, Dougherty, Jasper, Baldwin, and Sumter. It fought in many conflicts from the Maryland Campaign to Cold Harbor; was involved in Early's Shenandoah Valley operations and the Appomattox Campaign. The regiment reported 15 killed and 78 wounded at Malvern Hill; 22 killed and 119 wounded in the Maryland Campaign; 29 killed and 115 wounded at Chancellorsville; of the 341 engaged at Gettysburg, 15% were disabled.
