James George, Sr. ca (1744 - 1798)

James George was born before 5 Feb 1748 likely in North Carolina. His parents were Joseph and Ellenor George. Before 5 Oct 1769, James George and Judith Stewart married, likely in Orange County, North Carolina. Judith Stewart was a daughter of James and Anne Stewart of Orange County. At their marriage, James George was about 21 years of age. The George and Stewart families lived on adjacent lands in Orange County, and subsequently in Chatham County, North Carolina.

On 5 Feb 1769, James George acquired land in Warren County, Georgia from Jeffery Barksdale and wife Phebe for 50 pounds (306). The indenture conveying the land stated that Jeffrey Barksdale and his wife were of Hancock County, Georgia and that James George was of Warren County, Georgia.

On 5 Oct 1769, James George and his wife Judith (Stewart) George conveyed 200 acres of land in Orange County, North Carolina by indenture to Charles Milligan (299). The deed was filed in Aug 1772.

On 14 Feb 1770, the father of James George, Joseph George, made a Will in Orange County, North Carolina naming James George and his brother Ambrose George as Executors (289). Joseph George died before the probate of his Estate on 19 Feb 1772.

On 4 Aug 1771, Ambrose George and James George conveyed 114 acres of land in Chatham County, North Carolina to Jesse George. The land was part of property that Joseph George bought from John King, surveyed by Charles Foshee. (Source: Chatham County, North Carolina Deed Book A, Page 8)

On 2 Feb 1773, James George and wife Judith, Ambrose George, and Elizabeth George conveyed 114 acres of land in Chatham County, North Carolina to William George. The land was adjacent to land of James Petty on Copeland’s Path, James Petty and James George’s corner including the plantation where William George was living. Between 1776 and Aug 1784, James George acquired various parcels of land in Chatham County, North Carolina. In May 1776, Benjamin Watts made a deed to James George for land in Chatham County, and on 14 Oct 1778, James George acquired 100 acres of land on Robinson Creek in Chatham County, North Carolina. In Nov 1782, R. Kennon made a deed to James George, and in Aug 1784, James George acquired land by deed from William Petty and others.

On 13 Mar 1780, James George acquired 100 acres of land in Chatham County, North Carolina by land grant in exchange for 50 Shillings.

The 1790 U.S. federal census of Chatham County, North Carolina enumerates a James George household (303). James George was older than 15 years. Also living in the household were his wife, three males less than 16 years of age and four other females.

Although the disposition of land owned by James George in Chatham County, North Carolina has not be clarified, apparently he migrated to Warren County, Georgia before 29 May 1792 when Jesse Miller and wife Elizabeth sold land in Warren County by deed to James George. James George appeared on tax lists for Slatters District of Warren County, Georgia in 1794 and again in 1798.

The date of death of James George has not been identified. Presumably, he died after 1798, at which time he was more than 50 years of age.

On 2 Dec 1799, a deed by Jesse George, James George, Gideon George, Richard George, Joseph George, Drury Banks, Lewis Garner, and others to Philip Brantley for $2,000 for land originally granted to James Bishop was recorded in Chatham County, North Carolina. William Breed and Lemuel Pruitt, Justice of the Peace witnessed the deed. The deed appears to be made by the heirs of James George to transferred land he held in Chatham County, presumably in the settlement of his estate.

Notes and Comments

The date of birth of James George assumes that he was at least age 21 years on 5 Feb 1769 when he sold land in Orange County, North Carolina to Charles Milligan.

Transfers of land by Ambrose George and James George, Sr. during the period 4 Aug 1771 - 2 Feb 1773 may have been involved in settlement of the Estate of their father Joseph George, acting as Executors. This suggests that Joseph may have died before 4 Aug 1771.

Between Aug 1774 when James George, Sr. acquired land in Chatham County, North Carolina and 29 May 1792 when he purchased land in Warren County, Georgia from Jesse Miller and wife Elizabeth, the James George, Sr. family apparently migrated from North Carolina to Warren County, Georgia. The fate of land held by James George, Sr. in Chatham County, North Carolina is unclear.

The 1790 federal census of Chatham County, North Carolina enumerates two James George household, either of which may have been that of James George, Jr., son of Joseph George. Both census records include females that have not been identified.

Chatham County, North Carolina was created from parts of Orange County on 1 Apr 1771. Apparently, land held in the Estate of Joseph George was within that part of Orange County that fell within Chatham County after 1 Apr 1771.

In his Will of 14 Feb 1770, Joseph George left 411 acres of land in the hands of his executors James George and Ambrose George with power to sell the property and distribute the proceeds equally among his children with the exception of his son, Jesse George.
